SkyKey, Zurich

International flagship project for sustainable construction and working.

How do you go about transforming a one-time industrial site into an office complex for tomorrow? This means striking a sound balance between architecture, cost-effectiveness, density, open space and nature. With SkyKey, Steiner successfully developed and delivered a major, forward-looking and internationally acclaimed project that caters for a diversity of needs.

SkyKey ranks among the three most sustainable high-rise buildings in Europe and the top 30 worldwide.

SkyKey is Zurich North's new landmark: an impressive 63 m tall, the building forms a new focal point on what was previously Steiner's core site. Indeed, it is the first Swiss high-rise to achieve Platinum certification under the international LEED scheme by meeting highly stringent criteria for eco-friendly, resource-efficient construction.

For Steiner, sustainability means more than just energy-efficient building services installations and the use of recyclable materials: the solutions delivered by the Swiss company focus on the entire life-cycle of properties. Certified development schemes need to meet social, ecological and economic sustainability criteria.

The low resource consumption of SkyKey testifies to the success of Steiner's endeavours: this high-rise needs 50% less power and 45% less drinking water than a standard building development. Moreover, all workplaces were designed to allow flexible reconfiguration with a minimum of effort to meet changing requirements.

Given that sustainability is not only about resource efficiency but also about creating pleasant working environments, the SkyKey scheme additionally includes a seasonal restaurant with climate-friendly dishes, cosy coffee shops, relaxing lounges and an in-office library – thereby promoting an excellent work-life balance.
