Frauenfeld Cantonal Hospital

New benchmarks for quality, cost and efficiency.

Having been in operation for several decades, Frauenfeld Cantonal Hospital faced the question of how to cope with future demands. Based on a 1960s design, the building was no longer adequate in light of modern-day requirements or patient numbers.

Architecture and engineering in hospital construction projects are rigorously future-oriented.

Continuing maintenance work on the existing basis would no longer have been viable, given the building’s structural shortcomings in terms of current needs. It was therefore decided that the patient wards and treatment areas should be replaced by a newly built block and that the existing podium block should undergo major reconstruction work.

Both the client, Thurmed Immobilien AG, and Steiner AG as general contractor readily took up the special challenges involved in carrying out the construction work while the hospital remained in service. Work on constructing the new northern wing and ward block began in summer 2017.

The new building was formally inaugurated in mid-January 2020. The remaining work through to the final completion of the project in summer 2022 will also be carried out with hospital activities still in full swing. This calls for compliance with strict regulations with regard to logistics, noise, vibrations and particulate emissions.
