Steiner AG presents results of design competition for the MANUFAKT8409 commercial complex in Winterthur

Steiner AG has overseen a single-stage design competition, with seven invited designer teams, for the future MANUFAKT8409 commercial complex in Winterthur Neuhegi. The judging panel, chaired by Bettina Neumann, recommended the adoption of the scheme submitted by Superdraft Studio GmbH and Stauffer Rösch AG. All submitted entries will be on public display from 22 to 25 November 2021.

For several years, Steiner AG has been reflecting on ways of designing workspaces in such a way as to encourage a sense of community and on ways of bringing innovative commercial and industrial enterprises back into the city. One of the outcomes of these reflections is the “Manufakt” concept, which brings together work premises for companies operating in IT, cleantech, research and manufacturing. Following the handover of the first Manufakt commercial complex to its satisfied client in Zurich Altstetten last summer, the concept is due to be adopted soon in further commercial areas with town-centre proximity in Switzerland, including Wädenswil and Winterthur Neuhegi.

A flexible, networked future
Steiner AG oversaw a single-stage, non-anonymous, invitation-only design competition for the MANUFAKT8409 project, located adjacent to Winterthur Hegi station in the new and dynamic KIM district of Winterthur Neuhegi. The aim of the competition was to obtain a sound architectural and urban design solution for the development of the site by holding a qualified competitive procedure involving the City of Winterthur. Seven design teams comprising architects and landscape architects were invited to participate. Following presentation of the proposals, the judging panel assessed how well they fulfilled the project goals as well as various urban design, architectural, open space, access, occupancy and layout, cost-efficiency and sustainability criteria.

Having done so, the panel, chaired by Bettina Neumann, recommended the adoption of the scheme submitted by Superdraft Studio GmbH and Stauffer Rösch AG. In the panel's opinion, this design team delivered the best solution to the complex tasks posed by the competition brief while still meeting the specified quality requirements. The proposal had been very carefully developed and exhibits a high level of detail that perfectly matches the client's brief and the requirements of the masterplan. It represents a worthy gateway to the Neuhegi district and embodies a powerful urban design statement, simple and efficient building structure and the transparency of its clear-cut architecture. In the central courtyard, the functional requirements of access and lighting are transformed to create a space that affords myriad opportunities for communication. The next stage will involve refining the scheme into a basis for the statutory planning procedure.
