Topping-out ceremony for the extension of Oron-la-Ville secondary school

Nine months after the ceremony to lay the foundation stone, the extension of Oron-la-Ville secondary school has reached its final size. To mark the occasion, Steiner organised a topping-out ceremony to celebrate this significant milestone with its partners. This extension project has an innovative dimension: it is the first time that “smart” glass has been used in the construction of a school building in Switzerland.

On Wednesday evening, attendees gathered on the site of the new extension to celebrate the topping-out ceremony. This ceremony was an opportunity for Steiner to thank its partners for the quick progress of the construction work for this demanding project.

The project’s schedule represented a major challenge. From March 2020 to March 2021, Steiner carried out levelling and structural work for the new building. The teams are currently finishing off the interior work and the façades. The latter have a metallic finish that will lend the new extension its special character.

A first for Switzerland

Another striking element of the project involves the use of electrochromic glass as sun protection. An electrical current passing between the different layers of glass enables the windows to be tinted according to the brightness of the sunlight. This is the first time that these kinds of windows are being used for a school building in Switzerland. It provides maximum comfort for students and teachers, and eliminates the need for window blinds.

The extension’s highlight is the triple sports hall, located partially underneath the classrooms. Constructing and fitting out this space have been a significant challenge, given its impressive volume of 11,000 m3.

The new building will boost the use of renewable energies: not only will the entire school be heated by wood chip boilers, but some of the electricity consumed will be produced directly on the site by solar panels installed on the roof.

The Steiner teams are making every effort to complete the final phase of the project in a timely manner.
