Steiner AG's 100-year history published in prestigious book

As a driving force in the construction industry since 1915, Steiner AG has helped to shape Switzerland with countless building projects, large and small. To mark its centenary, Steiner has produced a comprehensive and lavishly illustrated book summarizing the company's history.
In addition to giving some intriguing insights into the history of Steiner AG, the book makes a valuable contribution to documenting the history of Switzerland's construction industry as a whole.

Running to about 150 pages, the recently published Steiner AG centenary book by economic historian Dr. Christoph Kohler provides a comprehensive overview of the company's history. The book draws on diverse historical as well as present-day sources. In addition to research at the Zurich archive of building history (Baugeschichtliches Archiv der Stadt Zürich) and the library of ETH Zurich, the author was able to obtain a wealth of information by talking to various people who have been involved in major Steiner projects over the years. Given that Steiner AG is active in both the national and international construction industries, the book has been produced in English and French as well as German.

Steiner AG as a chapter in the history of Swiss construction
The story of an enterprise that has been active for 100 years is inevitably more than just a company history: it also documents the history of the country as a whole. The book shows how Steiner AG was able to weather the two World Wars, how it was battered by economic recessions, and how it has expanded as the construction industry has boomed. A consistent theme of the book, however, is the steady evolution and change that Steiner AG has undergone over the years. Steiner has followed and helped to shape various trends in building culture and architecture, and the book therefore documents the outstanding buildings that these trends have produced over the past 100 years. Notable examples include Swissair's "Balsberg" head office, the Quai du Seujet "megastructure", the Friedrichsstadt-Passagen in Berlin, Zurich's Prime Tower and the Maison de la Paix in Geneva. Throughout Switzerland and across its borders, Steiner has been responsible for a large number of landmark structures. The historic photographs retrieved from the archives are a particular treat for readers. Amid its high-rise building and site development projects, Steiner's history has been closely bound up with a number of prominent personalities from business, society and politics. These include Klaus Schwab (Chairman of the World Economic Forum), Brigit Wehrli-Schindler (former head of the Zurich city planning department) and Philippe Burrin (Director of the Graduate Institute of International and Development Studies in Geneva): their views on urban construction as well their general Weltanschauung are featured in the book. All this makes the centenary publication a varied mix of family, company and Swiss construction history.
