Steiner: centenary celebration at Sihlcity, Zurich

Steiner AG marked its 100-year anniversary on Tuesday evening with a celebration, attended by some 120 guests, at the Sihlcity shopping and entertainment center in Zurich. Guided tours were organized to give the guests insights into the architectural quality and complexity of the Sihlcity center, which was developed and constructed by Steiner. The event was also attended by Markus Graf, CEO of Swiss Prime Site, and comedienne Margrit Bornet made sure it was an entertaining evening.

Steiner AG is celebrating its centenary this year, and at yesterday's successful event at Restaurant Rüsterei in Sihlcity it took the opportunity to thank its customers from the Zurich region. Steiner AG CEO Daniel Ducrey briefly traced the company's evolution over the past century and drew attention to the main milestones: "The ultra-modern Swissair headquarters project in the 1960s catapulted Steiner to the forefront of the construction industry. A further landmark project in the region was the Hotel Intercontinental – now the Swissôtel – erected in 1972 and at that time Zurich's tallest building. And I am delighted that today's centenary celebration is being hosted by Sihlcity, as one of the more recent milestones in Steiner AG's history."  Later in the evening Markus Graf, CEO of Swiss Prime Site, presented the idea of Sihlcity:  “For me, Sihlcity is a special model that works especially in the urban environment of a large center like Zurich. The principle of offering the services of a small town in an area of 100,000 m2 is unique." Expert guided tours of the Sihlcity shopping and entertainment center gave the guests a deeper insight into the architectural quality of the building and the technical complexity of its mechanical and electrical installations.

Prestige projects a recipe for success
Company founder Carl Steiner launched the business with a small joinery in Oerlikon, subsequently enlarging his firm so that it would ultimately become one of Switzerland's leading real estate developers and design-and-build/general contractors. At the end of the 1960s, the company became a top player in the sector by constructing the Swissair headquarters, an ultra-modern building for its time. When it was awarded the Quai du Seujet scheme in Geneva in 1984, Steiner constructed a pioneering building with an innovative mix that was to serve as a prototype in the ensuing years. Steiner today remains on a solid growth trajectory. Thanks to prestige projects such as the SkyKey building and Prime Tower in Zurich, the Maison de la Paix in Geneva and, most recently, the PostParc in Berne, Steiner remains an established construction sector leader.

Sihlcity – the visionary shopping and entertainment center
The Sihlcity complex, developed and constructed by Steiner, is outstanding in terms of both its large size and its urban design quality. A 100,000 m² office redevelopment scheme drawn up in the 1980s under the name "Utopark" had originally been planned for the derelict industrial site owned by paper manufacturer Sihl Papierfabrik. However, working in tandem with the architects, Steiner – as idea generator, project developer, design-and-build contractor and site manager – offered a compelling counterproposal: the Sihlcity. This starkly contrasting "city within the city" approach was fully in tune with the zeitgeist of the new millennium. The distinguished architect Theo Hotz developed an architectural and urban concept which, with its visionary holistic approach, succeeded in winning over all the various stakeholders. Adeptly integrated into the urban fabric, Sihlcity is the focal point of a municipal district that has generated new momentum for the local neighborhood. This achievement has been acknowledged by two International Council of Shopping Centres Inc. (ICSC) awards: the 2008 European Shopping Centre Award and the 2008 International Design and Development Award. A further prize was conferred in 2013 by the Stiftung für die Auszeichnung guter Bauten im Kanton Zürich, a foundation promoting high-class architecture in the Canton of Zurich.
