New major design-and-build contract in Geneva – Steiner AG to implement renovation of the International Labour Office's headquarters

Zurich /Geneva, 28 September 2015 – The International Labour Office (ILO) as project owner has awarded Steiner a "total" (design-and-build) contract for the complex refurbishment of its headquarters building in Geneva. The renovation of this building, which comprises 11 office storeys, will be carried out while work proceeds as usual, and is likely to continue until May 2019. The total construction volume is CHF 153 million.

The International Labour Office refurbishment project includes full-scale asbestos removal, the replacement of building services systems and installations, the complete remodelling of the interiors and finishings, the improvement of thermal performance, a facelift to the main building's exterior (while preserving its original appearance) plus the measures needed for compliance with AEAI/VKF (Swiss Association of Cantonal Fire Insurances) requirements. The start on site is scheduled for September 2015.

Built between 1969 and 1974, the International Labour Office headquarters is the result of a collaboration between architects Eugène Beaudouin, Pier Luigi Nervi and Alberto Camenzind. Reminiscent of a large sail atop a catamaran, the 44 m tall main building houses most of the organization's 1,400 employees on its 11 office stories.
