Glasi Quarter, Bülach

A site that heralds the future.


A former glassworks site in Bülach North is being transformed into a new city district offering a multifaceted living and working environment for up to 1,500 people. The redevelopment scheme for the 42,000 m2 site sets out to create a sustainable, self-contained urban quarter with 400 rental and 150 commonhold (condominium) apartments.

Instead of limiting its focus to architecture and construction, Steiner opted to involve the local population in the development process at an early stage. The aim was to discuss solutions for achieving the long-term integration of the new Glasi Quarter in the community, the implications for neighbouring residents and ways of integrating elderly people in the scheme. For Steiner, an open dialogue with residents is key to every project and a major success factor for the sustainable modelling of the public realm.

"Apart from its ecological and economic aspects, sustainability also has a social dimension," explains Michael Schiltknecht, Head of Real Estate Development at Steiner AG. "As a property and urban developer, we have a duty to think about the world of tomorrow. After all, the facilities we build will have a major impact on the lives and futures of coming generations."

The first Glasi Quarter buildings are scheduled for occupation in Q4 2021. Impressive features of the new district will include its unique architecture, public open spaces, coliving possibilites and the balanced mix of residential, light-industrial and service-sector accommodation that will house a wide range of facilities.
